Opening Night // California and Provence: Oceans of the Unconscious

The Francophone Museum is pleased to present California and Provence: Oceans of the Unconscious, a new exhibition of paintings by San Francisco–based artist Sofia Carmi, opening with a special evening event on July 30.

Sofia Carmi's work brings the landscapes of two regions into conversation with one another: California and Provence. Working intuitively across oil, watercolor, and acrylic, she builds invented landscapes through expressive brushstrokes and vibrant color. Her process moves fluidly between studio and site, and between the conscious and the unconscious, often reworking earlier paintings by incorporating torn paper and canvas from her own previous pieces. The result is a body of work that feels both immediate and meditative, a tribute to the natural world seen through an abstract lens.

About the artist

She also holds a Master's in Psychology from New College of California. Her work has been exhibited widely and is held in collections across Europe, Canada, and the United States. She currently lives in San Francisco.https://www.instagram.com/sofia_carmisf/
